$712M Battery Plant Proposed in Shelbyville for Energy Storage

6 Sep 2024
Shelbyville Battery Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, has proposed a $712 million battery manufacturing plant in Shelbyville, Kentucky, according to state incentive reports. The plant will focus on producing lithium-ion battery cells, packs, and modules for utility-scale energy storage, a crucial technology for balancing energy supply and demand in the renewable energy sector.

The project is expected to create nearly 1,600 full-time jobs with average wages of $25 per hour, including benefits. It has received preliminary approval for $35 million in incentives under the Kentucky Business Investment program and an additional $5 million through the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act.

Gov. Andy Beshear expressed optimism about the project, stating, "This investment will contribute to the state's economic growth and help us continue to lead in renewable energy initiatives." Ray Leathers, executive director of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, described the development as a "home run" for the community.

The proposed plant joins a growing number of renewable energy and electric vehicle-related projects in Kentucky, as the state pushes forward with investments aimed at supporting the transition to a clean energy grid.
