ABB and NASCAR Unveil Electric Racing Prototype, Launch Innovation Partnership

18 Jul 2024
ABB and NASCAR have announced a groundbreaking partnership to advance high-performance electric racing and explore strategic opportunities for electrification in motorsport. The ABB NASCAR Electrification Innovation Partnership was revealed at the 2024 NASCAR Chicago Street Race, along with a new electric vehicle (EV) prototype.

The partnership aligns with NASCAR's commitment to decarbonizing its operations and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. Ralph Donati, ABB Executive Vice President, highlighted the collaboration's goal of pushing the boundaries of electrification technology across various sectors, from EV racing to long-haul transportation.

The newly unveiled ABB NASCAR EV Prototype is a product of collaboration with NASCAR's OEM partners - Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. Featuring three STARD UHP 6-Phase motors and a 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery, the prototype delivers a peak power of 1,000 kW. It integrates regenerative braking and sustainable flax-based composite materials, marking a significant step towards sustainable racing.

NASCAR's Eric Nyquist, Senior Vice President and Chief IMPACT Officer, emphasized the partnership's role in achieving the organization's sustainability targets. ABB will assist in electrifying NASCAR's operations, including the deployment of EV charging infrastructure and the shift to renewable electricity at racetracks by 2028.

This collaboration reflects ABB's ongoing commitment to driving clean mobility, building on its experience as a title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship since 2018.
