ABB Completes Acquisition of Gamesa Electric’s Power Electronics Business
ABB has finalized its acquisition of the power electronics business of Gamesa Electric in Spain from Siemens Gamesa, originally announced in December 2024. Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquired business reported annual revenues of approximately $158 million (€145 million) for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2025.
The transaction brings around 400 employees, including key personnel in India, China, the United States, and Australia, along with two converter factories in Madrid and Valencia. The portfolio includes wind converters for doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG), industrial battery energy storage systems (BESS), and utility-scale solar inverters. ABB has also entered into a supply and services agreement with Siemens Gamesa.
The acquisition increases ABB’s serviceable installed base of wind converters by approximately 46 gigawatts and strengthens the Motion business area’s growth strategy. With over 45 years of experience in power electronics, Gamesa Electric brings technical expertise in renewable applications and established customer relationships.
Daniel Gerber, Business Line Manager, Renewable Power of ABB’s Motion High Power division, said the deal positions ABB to capture growing demand for renewable energy and accelerate adoption worldwide.
According to the International Energy Agency, electricity generation from renewables is expected to rise 60% from 9,900 TWh in 2024 to 16,200 TWh in 2030, surpassing coal as the largest source of electricity globally by 2025–2026. Solar PV will account for over half of this growth, followed by wind at roughly 30%.
The acquisition strengthens ABB’s position in renewable power conversion and modernizes its service offerings in line with predicted global market growth.
