ABB Invests $200 Million in Europe Grid Equipment Expansion
ABB has announced plans to invest approximately $200 million over the next three years to expand its medium-voltage manufacturing operations across Europe as demand for grid infrastructure accelerates.
The investment programme is aimed at increasing production capacity for power distribution technologies, supporting utilities, industrial customers, and rapidly growing data centre markets undergoing electrification and grid modernisation.
A significant portion of the investment will support construction of a new manufacturing facility in Dalmine, Italy, focused on production of medium-voltage switchgear and next-generation grid technologies. Additional upgrades are planned across ABB facilities in Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Norway, and Poland.
According to ABB, the expansion is intended to address rising electricity demand driven by AI data centres, industrial electrification, electric vehicle adoption, and broader upgrades to aging power infrastructure.
The company said part of the investment will also support development of more sustainable grid technologies, including equipment designed to reduce or eliminate reliance on SF6 gas, a greenhouse gas commonly used in electrical switchgear.
ABB executives stated that utilities and industrial operators across Europe are increasing spending on distribution infrastructure as electricity networks face growing pressure from new demand sources and the transition toward low-carbon energy systems.
Industry analysts have identified medium-voltage equipment as a key area of investment during the ongoing energy transition, particularly as digital infrastructure and electrification trends significantly increase power consumption.
The investment programme reflects a broader wave of manufacturing expansion among grid technology suppliers responding to rising global demand for transmission and distribution equipment.
ABB said the project is also expected to create new engineering and manufacturing jobs across Europe over the coming years.
