ABB to Deliver World’s Largest Shore Power System at Port of Rotterdam

6 Jan 2026

ABB has been selected by Rotterdam Shore Power (RSP), a joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and Eneco, to engineer and construct the world’s largest shore power systems at Europe’s busiest port. The installations will have a combined capacity exceeding 100 megavolt-amperes (MVA), supporting three deep-sea container terminals.

The project, scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2028, will provide power at 35 connection points across APM Terminals Maasvlakte II (APMT), Hutchison Ports ECT Delta, and Hutchison Ports ECT Euromax, allowing up to 32 container ships to connect simultaneously. A multi-year service agreement is included in the deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

ABB’s scope covers design, engineering, installation, commissioning, and testing, with prefabricated solutions minimizing operational disruption. The system integrates ABB’s SCADA technology to monitor energy usage and manage billing. The shore power solution allows vessels to turn off engines while at berth, potentially reducing annual CO₂ emissions by 96,000 metric tons and significantly improving air quality and noise levels in the port area.

The installations aim to help the port comply with the FuelEU Maritime Regulation, requiring ships above 5,000 gross tonnage to use onshore power or equivalent zero-emission technology in EU ports starting January 2030.
