ACEN Australia’s Birriwa Solar Project Gains Environmental Approval

9 Sep 2024
ACEN Australia has received environmental approval from the federal government for its Birriwa Solar project, which will feature around 1 million solar panels and 600 MW of battery storage. Located near Dunedoo in New South Wales, the project is part of the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (CWO REZ), which has also received approval for new transmission infrastructure.

Once operational, the Birriwa Solar project will generate enough energy to power 229,000 homes annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year. The project is expected to significantly contribute to Australia's renewable energy goals.

ACEN Australia is preparing for construction, which is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. Plans include temporary worker accommodation and sourcing local goods and services to support the community. The company also aims to invest in long-term social initiatives through its Social Investment Program. Energy generation is projected to start in 2029, aligning with the CWO REZ development timeline.
