Adani Group to Build Major Transmission Lines in Kenya Under New PPP

12 Nov 2024
Adani Group, through its subsidiary Adani Energy Solutions Ltd., has signed a $736-million public-private partnership contract with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Co. (KETRACO) to develop a significant power transmission network across Kenya. This 30-year contract covers the financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of 171 miles of transmission lines and three substations, addressing Kenya's growing energy demand.

The first major undertaking includes constructing a 128-mile, 400-kV transmission line from Gilgil to Konza with segments passing through Thika and Malaa. Additionally, the project will include a 132-kV substation at Thurdiburo and a 400/220/132kV substation at Rongai. Once complete, these developments aim to enhance power reliability, minimize transmission losses, and support regional power exchange in East Africa.

The agreement also involves building a 43-mile, 132-kV double-circuit transmission line linking Menengai to Olkalou and Rumuruti to connect the Menengai geothermal power project, which could potentially generate up to 1,600 MW.

Separately, Africa50, in collaboration with the African Development Bank, is supporting additional transmission projects in Kenya, including the 110-mile Lessos-Loosuk line and the 40-mile Kisumu-Musaga line. These projects mark the first independent power transmission initiatives in Kenya, with completion expected to establish a model for future PPP-based transmission financing across Africa.
