AES Indiana Brings Petersburg Energy Center Online with Solar and Battery Storage
AES Indiana, a subsidiary of AES Corporation, has officially launched the Petersburg Energy Center, a 250 MW solar facility paired with 180 MWh of battery storage, in Pike County. The project adds flexible, modern capacity to the region’s energy grid while replacing retired units at the Petersburg Generating Station.
The facility comprises over 515,000 solar panels and battery storage designed to manage peak energy demand, reduce fuel and operating costs, and provide low-cost, reliable power for more than 100,000 homes. The project was highlighted in AES Indiana’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan as critical for meeting the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) seasonal capacity requirements.
“This project helps AES Indiana maintain reliability today and tomorrow for our customers in Central Indiana,” said Brandi Davis-Handy, President of AES Indiana. The investment also supports local jobs and community development, with the facility qualifying as an Energy Community, increasing applicable tax credits.
The Petersburg Energy Center follows other regional initiatives, including the Pike County Battery Energy Storage System, which stores up to 200 MW of electricity for four hours. Local leaders, including Ashley Willis, Executive Director of the Pike County Economic Development Corporation, highlighted the continued economic partnership between AES Indiana and the community.
The facility represents part of AES Indiana’s $1.1 billion investment in Pike County since 2024, demonstrating the company’s commitment to advancing renewable energy and sustaining reliable service for Central Indiana residents.
