Renewable energy company Agilitas Energy has completed the construction of a groundbreaking 4.8 MW/23.7 MWh standalone lithium-ion battery project in Long Island City, Queens. This innovative non-wires solution, developed under a ten-year contract with Con Edison, aims to discharge up to four hours of stored energy during the utility's peak demand period, from May 1 through September 30.

Scheduled to come online in 2024, the project is anticipated to enhance Con Edison's grid reliability and resiliency. Agilitas plans to leverage off-peak charging to store energy when demand is low, offering a cost-effective solution for providing critical, dispatchable demand relief during peak hours.

The initiative is set to participate in New York's Value of Distributed Energy Resources value stack tariff, reinforcing its commitment to supporting local ratepayers and alleviating deficiencies in the existing electrical infrastructure. This strategic move aligns with New York Governor Kathy Hochul's ambitious plan to achieve 6 GW of energy storage by 2030, contributing significantly to the state's renewable energy goals.

Agilitas Energy's President and CEO, Barrett Bilotta, emphasized the project's significance in overcoming regulatory hurdles and zoning restrictions in New York City. He stated, "This energy storage system will serve as a huge win for consumers as our project will enhance reliability, support the transition to a clean energy future and help defer the costs of building more infrastructure."
