Alfen Partners with FlevoBESS to Deliver Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage System in the Netherlands

30 Jan 2025
Alfen, a leading European energy solutions provider, has signed an agreement with FlevoBESS to deliver a cutting-edge 31.6 MW/126.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Netherlands. This project, one of the first large-scale four-hour BESS systems in the country, is located near Dronten, in Flevoland--a key region for the Netherlands' energy transition. Scheduled for completion by Q3 2025, the system will support the region's energy grid by stabilizing power supply, integrating renewable energy, and expanding storage capacity to 204 MWh by 2028.

The project marks a milestone in energy storage with Alfen providing its advanced battery containers, capable of holding up to 4 MWh within a compact 20 ft container. These containers, combined with Alfen's largest inverters, enable up to four hours of discharge capability, providing enhanced flexibility for grid balancing, renewable energy integration, and energy trading. The system's design reduces the required footprint while increasing efficiency and operational reliability.

Additionally, Alfen's Smart Grids team will deploy a high-capacity walk-in substation, ensuring seamless integration with the local energy infrastructure. The project will feature six 7.5 MVA subsystems.

FlevoBESS, a consortium of local entrepreneurs and stakeholders from Flevoland, is committed to advancing sustainable energy in the region. Gert Naber, Board Member of FlevoBESS, emphasized the importance of collaboration and local engagement in driving sustainable progress, adding that Alfen's expertise was key to the project's success.
