Amazon and Iberdrola Expand Renewable Energy Partnership with New PPAs in Portugal and Spain

5 Feb 2025
Iberdrola and Amazon have strengthened their collaboration in renewable energy and cloud services with a new agreement adding 476 megawatts (MW) of power purchase agreements (PPAs) across Portugal and Spain. This expansion brings their global partnership to five countries and contributes to Amazon's goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The new projects include 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex in Portugal, Amazon's first PPA in the country. In Spain, agreements cover 212 MW from the Ciudad Rodrigo Solar PV Plant in Salamanca and 45 MW from the Valdemoro Wind Farm in Burgos. Collectively, these projects will generate 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity annually, enough to power around 300,000 homes.

Since 2022, Iberdrola and Amazon have collaborated on renewable energy and AWS cloud solutions. In 2024, Iberdrola migrated key applications, including its DOMINA Renewables Operations & Maintenance ecosystem, to AWS. The company is also leveraging AI and high-performance computing (HPC) from AWS to enhance wind farm efficiency and weather forecasting.

Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President Customer Business at Iberdrola, highlighted the partnership's role in accelerating decarbonization and improving operational efficiency. Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, emphasized their commitment to advancing sustainability goals and supporting Iberdrola's growth through AWS's scalability and AI capabilities.

With over 600 renewable projects worldwide, Amazon remains the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally. Iberdrola has been recognized as Europe's top PPA seller for the second consecutive year, according to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025.
