Amazon Announces $3 Billion Data Center for Warren County, Mississippi
Amazon announced plans to build a $3-billion data center in Warren County, Mississippi, near the new Port of Vicksburg. This marks the company’s fourth major data center in the state, bringing total planned investments to $29 billion. Two additional Amazon data centers are already under construction in Madison County.
The new facility is expected to generate at least 200 full-time jobs, according to statements from Amazon and Gov. Tate Reeves. Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with the project falling under the 2024 Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority legislation applied to Amazon’s Madison County data centers. State officials indicated no additional public funding would be required.
Amazon also committed $150,000 to a new Amazon Warren County Community Program, aimed at providing grants to local organizations.
While data centers promise tax revenue and employment, critics note that such projects generate relatively few jobs compared to the investment size and footprint. Concerns have also been raised over environmental impact, energy consumption, and transparency in operations.
The announcement comes as Amazon seeks to expand AI infrastructure and follows a $38 billion agreement earlier in November to provide OpenAI with access to some of its computing capacity.
