Amazon to Invest $15B in Indiana Data Center Campus, Partnering with NIPSCO
Amazon announced plans to invest $15 billion in Northern Indiana to build new data center campuses aimed at supporting artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technologies. The project is expected to create over 1,100 high-skilled jobs and support thousands more across the local data center supply chain.
The new campuses will add 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity, with the total project ultimately providing up to 3 gigawatts of energy to the regional grid. Amazon is partnering with NIPSCO through its subsidiary, NIPSCO Generation LLC (GenCo), to deliver energy for the project. The agreement is structured so local residents and businesses will not incur additional costs, while projected energy cost savings for NIPSCO customers could reach approximately $1 billion over 15 years.
This investment builds on Amazon’s existing presence in Indiana, where the company has invested over $31 billion since 2010, supporting 24,500 direct jobs and 27,500 indirect jobs. The initiative includes workforce development programs, such as training for data center technicians, fiber-optic specialists, and STEM-focused K-12 education initiatives.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun highlighted the economic benefits, citing job creation, expanded tax base, and strengthened local infrastructure. David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, emphasized the long-term commitment to technological growth and community engagement in the state.
The new data center campuses are designed for scale, energy efficiency, and advanced AI workloads, positioning Northern Indiana as a hub for cloud computing and next-generation technology.
