Ameren to Build 380 Miles of Power Lines in $1.6B Illinois Project
Ameren has received state approval to proceed with a $1.6 billion power transmission initiative in Illinois aimed at enhancing energy access and grid reliability. The project, called the Central Illinois Grid Transformation Program (CIGTP), includes building and upgrading approximately 380 miles of power lines across 13 counties in central Illinois.
The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) granted the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, allowing Ameren to start construction later in 2025. The program plans to construct three new substations and upgrade several existing ones, primarily using existing infrastructure corridors to minimize land impact.
The project seeks to address increasing electricity demand in the region, improve grid reliability, and lower energy supply costs for residential and business customers in Ameren's service area. Completion is expected by 2029.
Shawn Schukar, Chairman and President of Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois, highlighted the project's role in supporting local economic development and ensuring energy access amid growth in the region.
This transmission upgrade is part of a broader effort to modernize the Midwest power grid and facilitate integration of diverse energy sources, supporting affordable and reliable electricity for Illinois communities.
