Apollo Commits €3.2B to RWE JV Supporting German Grid Expansion
Apollo has announced a €3.2 billion equity commitment to a newly formed joint venture with RWE, Germany's largest power producer and a major player in renewable energy. The JV will manage RWE's 25.1% stake in Amprion, a Transmission System Operator (TSO) serving approximately 29 million people across seven German federal states.
The joint venture will provide capital to support Amprion's extensive grid expansion plans over the next decade, enhancing Germany's energy infrastructure to meet growing demands. This investment is backed by stable dividend returns from Amprion's regulated asset base.
Jamshid Ehsani, Apollo Partner, emphasized the partnership's role in funding critical grid infrastructure and Apollo's broader commitment to infrastructure investments in Europe, particularly in Germany, France, Italy, and the UK.
The JV aligns with RWE's strategy to expand its portfolio in renewables, batteries, and flexible power generation while focusing on power generation and energy trading. The transaction is pending regulatory approval and expected to close in Q4 2025.
Apollo has a strong track record of providing capital solutions across Europe, having originated over $100 billion in bespoke financing since 2020, with plans to deploy $100 billion in Germany over the next decade.
