Arevon Energy Begins Construction of 124-MW Big Muddy Solar Project in Illinois
Arevon Energy, Inc. has commenced construction on its 124-megawatt (MWdc) Big Muddy Solar Project in Jackson County, Illinois. The $200 million facility is expected to deliver enough domestic energy to power more than 24,000 homes when commercial operations begin at the end of 2026.
The project, Arevon’s first utility-scale solar development in Illinois, is being built in partnership with Signal Energy and will employ over 250 workers, including members of IBEW Local 702, IUOE Local 318, and Laborers’ International Union Local 773. In addition to generating renewable energy, Big Muddy Solar will contribute more than $12.6 million in property tax revenue over its lifetime, supporting local schools, public safety, and community infrastructure.
The facility incorporates environmental sustainability measures, including pollinator habitats beneath and around solar panels to protect local ecosystems. Big Muddy Solar is under a long-term virtual power purchase agreement with a U.S. multinational technology company.
At a milestone ceremony on November 18, key speakers included Kevin Smith, CEO of Arevon; C.J. Calandro, Jackson County Board Chairman; and Dawn McClerren, Executive Director at the Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce. They highlighted the project’s potential to provide affordable, reliable energy, create jobs, and support community initiatives in education, public health, and food security.
Arevon is actively expanding its renewable energy portfolio in the Midwest, including ongoing projects in Indiana and Missouri totaling over 1,000 MWdc. The company owns and operates more than 5.5 GW of solar and energy storage projects across 17 states and is advancing nearly 850 MW of new capacity.
