Austin Energy Signs 100 MW Battery Storage Deal with Jupiter Power
Austin Energy has signed a large-scale battery storage agreement with Jupiter Power, marking the largest such initiative in the utility's history. The deal will provide up to 100 MW of electricity from a utility-scale battery facility, contributing to Austin Energy's target of 125 MW of battery storage by 2027.
Mayor Kirk Watson highlighted the project's broader impact: "This battery storage project boosts our grid, but it's more than an investment in infrastructure -- it's a commitment to a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Austin."
The battery system will capture electricity during periods of low demand and dispatch it during peak usage, enhancing grid reliability, supporting renewable energy integration, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The 20-year agreement is valued at approximately $288 million, or $14.4 million per year.
Stuart Reilly, interim general manager of Austin Energy, emphasized that battery storage is a key component of the utility's Resource, Generation and Climate Protection Plan to 2035, providing a flexible path toward clean, reliable, and equitable energy.
Andy Bowman, CEO of Jupiter Power, said, "Austin Energy has a clear vision for the future, and as both a proud customer and partner, Jupiter couldn't be happier to be part of it."
The initiative strengthens Austin's energy infrastructure, supports renewable growth, and aligns with the city's climate and reliability objectives, further establishing Austin Energy as a leader in clean energy innovation.
