Australia Begins World’s Longest Undersea Cable for Solar Energy Exports

14 Nov 2025

Australia has begun construction on the Sun Cable Project, a 4,200-kilometer undersea energy corridor designed to deliver 3.2 gigawatts of solar power from the Northern Territory to Singapore. The project, one of the most ambitious renewable energy initiatives ever undertaken, will transport clean electricity generated in Australia’s desert region to Southeast Asia, marking a major milestone in international green energy trade.

Once operational, the system is expected to provide enough electricity to power over one million homes, significantly boosting Singapore’s renewable energy supply while cementing Australia’s role as a major exporter of clean power.

Energy analysts say the project could reshape global energy markets by turning abundant sunlight into a viable export commodity. By demonstrating the feasibility of long-distance, cross-border renewable energy transmission, the Sun Cable Project may position itself as the first link in a future network of international clean-energy corridors.

If successful, experts believe similar large-scale projects could emerge worldwide, connecting continents through “invisible highways” of renewable electricity and accelerating the global energy transition.

The initiative is being closely watched by policymakers, investors and sustainability advocates as a potential blueprint for long-range green power infrastructure.
