Avangrid and Statkraft Sign Second VPPA in Nine Months

16 Aug 2024

Avangrid and Statkraft have signed a second short-term Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) within nine months, this time for energy from Avangrid's 35 MW Casselman wind farm in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The agreement reflects the companies' commitment to expanding their renewable energy footprint in the United States.

The Casselman wind project, operational since 2007, consists of 23 wind turbines on a rehabilitated surface mine near Meyersdale and Rockwood, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. This project brings clean energy jobs to the region and continues to support the clean energy transition.

Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, emphasized the significance of partners like Statkraft in accelerating the clean energy transition, while Patrick Pfeiffer, Managing Director of Statkraft's U.S. operations, highlighted the role of power purchase agreements in driving the green transition.

This VPPA follows an earlier agreement between the two companies for Avangrid's 300 MW Streator Cayuga Ridge South wind farm in Illinois. Both companies have a history of collaboration, including a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for energy produced at Iberdrola's Korytnica II wind farm in Poland.
