Avantus to Build 2,000-Acre Solar Project Near Phoenix
Avantus Clean Energy has announced plans to develop the Pinyon Solar Project, a 2,000-acre solar and battery energy storage facility in Maricopa County, Arizona. The project is expected to generate up to 300 megawatts, enough electricity to power approximately 70,000 homes.
Construction is set to begin in late 2026, with completion targeted for early 2028. At its peak, the project will employ around 500 workers, and will create five full-time operational roles upon completion.
The Pinyon project will be located near the Pinal West Substation, allowing for grid integration with minimal infrastructure expansion. A battery storage system will occupy about 24 acres, with the remainder dedicated to photovoltaic solar panels and support facilities.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has approved the necessary rezoning, converting the land designation from rural to utility use. The site includes both private land and federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
According to Avantus, the facility will generate more than $100 million in tax revenue over its lifespan to support schools, infrastructure, and emergency services. The company also notes that the chosen solar technology requires little water, helping preserve local groundwater supplies.
The project comes amid growing electricity demand in Arizona, driven by rapid population growth, new industry, and rising temperatures. Avantus says solar and storage solutions are key to meeting this demand sustainably.
