Ballard Power Systems to Supply Hydrogen Engines for California’s Zero-Emission Trains

12 Dec 2024
Ballard Power Systems, a leading Canadian hydrogen fuel cell provider, has partnered with Stadler US to deliver 8 MW of FCmove®-HD+ hydrogen engines for zero-emission trains. This agreement, part of a multi-year collaboration, supports the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in its commitment to decarbonizing rail transport.

The deal includes 10 hydrogen-powered FLIRT H2 trains with an option for 19 additional units. These trains will replace diesel locomotives on non-electrified rail lines, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding the expense of catenary infrastructure. The FLIRT H2 trains, designed to meet Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards, are the first hydrogen-powered trains approved for operation in the United States.

Randy MacEwen, CEO of Ballard, highlighted the significance of the order: "This expands our rail market presence and reinforces the value of our fuel cell technology for regions without electrified tracks." Hydrogen engines provide comparable performance to diesel, offering efficient range, payload, and refueling times.

Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler US, added: "The FLIRT H2 trains support California's carbon neutrality goals while replacing outdated diesel models."

This initiative reflects a broader global shift toward hydrogen-powered rail solutions, positioning California as a leader in sustainable transportation.
