Borkum Riffgrund 3: Germany’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm Completed

15 Jan 2025
The Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm, located off the coast of northern Germany, is now fully installed, becoming the country's largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of 913 MW. The project was delivered in collaboration with Ørsted, Siemens Gamesa, and Cadeler, which spearheaded the transportation and installation of the wind turbines.

Cadeler utilized its wind installation vessel, the Wind Osprey, equipped with a newly upgraded main crane capable of lifting 1,600 metric tons. The installation began in July 2024, following the completion of Gode Wind 3, another Ørsted wind farm. Together, the two projects involved the installation of 67 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines, contributing a combined capacity of 1.1 GW.

This milestone is also notable as Borkum Riffgrund 3 is the first German offshore wind farm to operate without a substation, directly connecting to the DolWin epsilon offshore converter platform. The combined energy from both projects is expected to power over one million German households, marking significant progress in the country's decarbonization efforts.
