Canadian Solar Secures 420 MWh BESS Deal with Drax in the UK
Canadian Solar has announced that its energy storage division, e-STORAGE, will supply 420 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for two projects owned by Drax Group in the United Kingdom.
The developments include a 60 MW / 120 MWh installation in Marfleet, England, and a 150 MW / 300 MWh system in Neilston, Scotland. Both projects were originally developed by Apatura before being acquired by Drax Group as part of its flexible generation portfolio.
Under the agreement, e-STORAGE will deliver fully integrated battery systems using its SolBank 3.0 technology, along with long-term operational services, including monitoring, maintenance, and performance optimization.
Construction at Marfleet is expected to begin in Q3 2026, while the Neilston project is scheduled for early 2027.
Lee Dawes, Chief Operations Officer at Drax Group, said the projects mark the company’s first investment in short-duration energy storage. Giles Hanglin, CEO of Apatura, highlighted their role in grid resilience and renewable integration, while Colin Parkin, President of Canadian Solar and e-STORAGE, emphasized the importance of building a flexible and reliable energy system
