Centrica Brings 40MW Battery Storage Online in Sweden

16 Apr 2026

Energy company Centrica has announced the commissioning of two battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Sweden, marking a further step in its investment in flexible energy infrastructure.

The projects, located in Borlänge, have a combined capacity of 40 megawatts (MW) and are designed to help balance electricity supply and demand by storing excess renewable energy for later use.

According to the company, the systems are capable of delivering enough electricity annually to power approximately 1,100 homes, highlighting their role in supporting local energy resilience.

Battery storage is increasingly viewed as a critical component of the energy transition, enabling grids to manage the intermittency of renewable sources such as wind and solar. By storing energy during periods of high generation and releasing it during peak demand, BESS assets can improve grid stability and efficiency.

The new Swedish installations form part of Centrica’s broader strategy to expand its flexible energy portfolio, with the company reporting more than 770MW of battery storage capacity under contract across Europe and the UK.

Centrica Energy, the company’s trading and optimisation arm, will manage the operation of the assets, helping to optimise performance and integrate them into electricity markets.

The announcement aligns with Centrica’s wider £4 billion investment plan aimed at supporting the transition to a more sustainable and secure energy system.

As European countries accelerate renewable deployment, battery storage projects such as these are expected to play an increasingly important role in ensuring reliable energy supply while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
