The Offshore Supply Vessel Coastal Liberty is making waves in the German Wadden Sea, operating with a hydrogen-electric energy system developed by eCap Marine. This shift to green hydrogen marks a key milestone in reducing the environmental impact of maritime operations, aligning with industry efforts to transition towards sustainable energy.

After receiving class certification from DNV in February 2024, the vessel now runs emission-free, thanks to eCap Marine's containerized power system, which combines Ballard FCwave fuel cells and a Lehmann Marine battery system. The green hydrogen is produced using local offshore wind power, further enhancing the project's sustainability profile.

The system is designed for scalability, with Lars Ravens, Managing Director of eCap Marine, highlighting its potential for larger commercial vessels and longer voyages. With quick and easy refueling capabilities and reduced vibrations on board, the crew benefits from a more responsive propulsion system.

Jochen Kaufholt, CEO of Offshore Service Gesellschaft, called the Coastal Liberty a "flagship for the maritime energy transition in Europe," signaling a shift towards emission-free shipping across the industry.
