Croatia Invests €125M to Modernize Power Grid and Strengthen Energy Network

11 Apr 2025
Croatia has signed two infrastructure agreements totaling €125 million to upgrade its national electricity transmission network and support long-term energy stability.

Ante Šušnjar, Minister of Economy, formalized the deals with Luka Balen of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Igor Ivanković of HOPS, and Ivan Fugaš of LNG Hrvatska.

The largest investment--€99.18 million--is led by HOPS (Croatian Transmission System Operator) and funded through the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NPOO). It will support the digitalization and revitalization of Croatia's electricity infrastructure, including upgrades to two substations and the replacement of at least eight transformers.

The project aims to improve reliability, reduce transmission risks, and enable better integration of renewable sources into the grid.

A separate €46.1 million project will expand the LNG terminal on Krk Island, partially financed through NPOO with €25 million in EU grants. The increase in regasification capacity will support regional gas supply, but the focus remains on strengthening the domestic energy backbone.

"These investments mark a critical step in securing stable, modern infrastructure that supports both current needs and future demands," said Igor Ivanković.
