Denmark’s Bladt Industries Takes Center Stage in Dominion Energy’s Offshore Wind Venture

24 Jan 2024

In a crucial step forward for Dominion Energy's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, the initial 880 MW offshore substation has arrived at Bladt Industries' production site in Aalborg, Denmark. This achievement is part of the consortium's commitment to deliver three substations for the 2.6 GW offshore wind initiative in the United States.

Denmark-based Bladt Industries is spearheading the design, procurement, and manufacturing of steel structures and jacket foundations for the substations. Simultaneously, Semco Maritime is overseeing the design, procurement, and installation of electrical equipment, energy systems, and inter-array cables. Additionally, Bladt Industries will provide transition pieces for the wind turbine foundations under a separate contract.

Each of the 880 MW offshore substations, expected to be completed in 2026, will weigh a staggering 3,800 tonnes, excluding jacket foundations and pin piles. Dominion Energy has strategically selected the consortium of DEME Group and Prysmian as the Balance of Plant (BoP) contractors for transportation, installation, and engineering services, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the project.

The CVOW project, situated 27 miles off the Virginia Beach coast, will feature 176 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW wind turbines and three offshore substations. Construction activities are underway, with foundations arriving at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal in Virginia. The installation of foundations and turbines is scheduled to commence in 2024, with the offshore wind farm expected to generate electricity for up to 660,000 households upon completion in 2026.
