AusNet, Hitachi Energy Deliver Victoria’s Largest Grid-Scale Battery Connection

AusNet and Hitachi Energy have completed the transmission connection for the Mortlake Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Victoria, which will become one of the state's largest grid-scale batteries once operational. The 300 MW / 650 MWh facility will support grid stability, integrate more renewable energy, and provide power equivalent to roughly 135,000 homes.

The project required the delivery and installation of two advanced 500 kV, 180 MVA transformers, supplied by Hitachi Energy. These transformers are designed for high cycling, dynamic loading, and extreme environmental conditions, ensuring efficient conversion of stored battery energy into high-voltage electricity for the national grid. They also feature low-loss designs and TXpert™ digital monitoring for enhanced performance and reduced carbon emissions.

Mohamed Abdur Rab, Project Manager at AusNet, said the collaboration "strengthens Victoria's energy resilience and supports Australia's clean energy future." Dinesh Kumar, Market Manager at Hitachi Energy, highlighted the role of the transformers in enabling efficient transmission and connecting thousands of homes to reliable clean energy.

The Mortlake BESS follows AusNet and Hitachi Energy's successful 2024 collaboration on the Golden Plains Wind Farm, Australia's largest onshore wind project. These efforts demonstrate the importance of advanced infrastructure, strategic partnerships, and innovation in accelerating Australia's transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.
