Australian Startup Unveils Innovative PV-Hydrogen Standalone Power System

Boundary Power, a collaboration between Horizon Power and Ampcontrol, is making waves with its groundbreaking Hydrogen Integrated Stand-Alone Power System (HiSAP). This innovative system integrates solar power with a renewable hydrogen hydride battery for electricity storage and generation, eliminating the need for traditional diesel backup generators.

The HiSAP is a 100% relocatable, modular standalone power system designed to explore technical aspects of design, integration, and operation, with commercial availability on the horizon. The system was developed in partnership with hydrogen energy storage specialist Lavo and inverter manufacturer Selectronic Australia.

The first HiSAP has been installed at Ampcontrol's LED manufacturing facility in Ringwood, Victoria. This pioneering system replaces the conventional diesel generator with a self-contained hydrogen power system, demonstrating its potential to revolutionize standalone power systems and renewable energy generation.

The HiSAP includes a 4 kWp rack-mounted solar array, a 16 kWh battery energy storage system, a 7.5 kW inverter, a 20 kWh metal hydride hydrogen energy storage system (HESS) with an additional 6 kWp solar array, 5 kWh of battery storage, a 2.3 kW electrolyser, and a 3 kW fuel cell. Importantly, it generates its own hydrogen fuel on-site.

Funded in part by the Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate Action (DEECA) Victoria, this project represents a crucial step towards commercializing the HiSAP technology and integrating hydrogen systems into standalone power solutions.

Boundary Power's General Manager, Simon Duggan, emphasized the significance of this innovation: "This is a really, really, really exciting time."
