Canadian Solar Connects First Battery Storage Project to Japan’s Grid

Canadian Solar Inc. has delivered its first grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) in Japan through its energy storage subsidiary e-STORAGE.

The 2 MW system, with an energy capacity of 8.25 MWh DC, is located adjacent to the Naebo substation in Sapporo City, Hokkaido. The project was developed by Canadian Solar Projects K.K. and awarded under a 2023 public land leasing initiative by Hokkaido Electric Power Network Company, Inc.

The facility is designed to participate in both the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) and the Balancing Market (EPRX). It is expected to support grid flexibility, renewable energy integration and market stability in Hokkaido. The system is built on e-STORAGE’s SolBank platform.

The battery system was delivered to the site in September 2025, with final commissioning completed in early December 2025.

e-STORAGE handled project design, engineering and commissioning and will provide long-term maintenance and inspection services. The company also holds Japan’s government-recognized Wide Area Management Certificate, authorizing it to manage end-of-life lithium-ion battery systems in compliance with national regulations.

Colin Parkin, President of Canadian Solar and President of e-STORAGE, described the project as a milestone in the company’s efforts to expand energy storage operations in Japan.

Japan has been expanding its battery storage capacity to support grid stability and renewable integration as part of broader energy transition efforts.
