EDF and Engie Expand Large-Scale Battery Storage in Belgium
EDF Power Solutions has commissioned a 150 MW/600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lixhe, Belgium, while Engie has begun construction of a 74 MW/296 MWh system at Coo.
The Lixhe project, developed through Luminus, represents a €160 million investment and connects directly to Elia’s high-voltage grid. Its four-hour storage capacity is designed to support daily grid balancing, renewable energy integration and electricity supply security.
At Coo, Engie is developing the BESS as part of an energy hub incorporating pumped storage, solar generation and EV charging. Commissioning is planned for early 2028.
The projects highlight Belgium’s growing role in grid-scale energy storage, supported by a regulatory framework and capacity-market mechanisms that encourage investment in flexibility resources.
