Germany Plans Europe’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Facility

Germany is set to host Europe’s largest battery energy storage project, with a new grid-scale facility planned for the Lusatia region.

The project is being developed by Fluence Energy, a U.S.-based energy storage technology provider, and will be transferred to LEAG Clean Power upon completion. The battery system will have a total storage capacity of 4 gigawatt-hours (GWh) and a maximum power input of 1 gigawatt (GW), making it the largest battery storage installation currently planned in Europe.

Once operational, the facility—known as Jänschwalde 1000—will be capable of storing excess electricity generated from renewable energy sources, particularly solar power and wind energy, and releasing it during periods of high demand. The four-hour storage design is intended to improve grid stability and support the integration of intermittent renewable generation.

The system will use Fluence Energy’s Smartstack technology, which places control and monitoring systems at the base of the installation, allowing for higher energy density and more efficient scaling compared to traditional designs.

According to Thomas Brandenburg, Managing Director of LEAG Clean Power GmbH, the facility will play a key role in optimizing existing grid infrastructure and balancing energy supply and demand.

The project forms part of LEAG’s broader GigawattFactory initiative, a regional network of large-scale renewable generation and energy storage assets.
