LEAG and Fluence to Build Europe’s Largest Battery Storage in Germany

LEAG Clean Power and Fluence Energy have announced plans to build Europe’s largest battery energy storage system, a 1 GW / 4 GWh facility in Jänschwalde, Germany. The project, named GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000, will use Fluence’s Smartstack™ energy storage technology and aims to strengthen Germany’s energy transition efforts.

The facility will provide grid stability, support energy trading, and integrate renewable energy more efficiently. Designed as a four-hour storage system, it is intended to optimize existing grid connections and enhance energy security.

Adi Roesch, CEO of LEAG Group, highlighted the importance of combining renewable energy sources with flexible storage and power plants to ensure consistent energy availability. Julian Nebreda, President and CEO of Fluence, called the project a “flagship” for the transformation of Germany and Europe’s energy system.

The collaboration aligns with Germany’s renewed focus on energy storage as a critical component of a secure, affordable, and sustainable power system. LEAG Clean Power is part of the LEAG Group, one of Germany’s largest electricity producers, while Fluence Energy is a global leader in energy storage systems and optimization software.

Construction of the GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 will mark the largest single storage project undertaken by Fluence to date, reflecting growing investment in large-scale battery solutions across Europe.
