Large-Scale 400 MW Battery Storage System Boosts Germany’s Power Grid
Envision Energy and Elements Green are advancing a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in northern Germany, adding further momentum to the country’s grid expansion and renewable integration strategy.
The Stadorf energy storage project will deliver 400 MW of power capacity and 1,600 MWh of storage, placing it among the largest battery storage developments currently under construction in Germany.
The system will be based on Envision’s Gen 8 BESS platform, a four-hour duration design featuring advanced battery technology and AI-driven grid integration. The setup is intended to support large-scale balancing of renewable generation, helping smooth fluctuations from wind and solar output.
Project documentation notes that the installation will address complex regulatory and grid-connection requirements while complying with Germany’s strict technical standards for reliability and performance. Once operational, the facility will provide key grid services, including frequency regulation, peak shifting, and renewable energy integration support.
Envision Energy stated that the project combines its technology platform with Elements Green’s local market expertise to enable efficient large-scale deployment. Elements Green emphasized the importance of storage in enabling higher renewable penetration in markets such as Germany, where variable generation continues to increase.
The Stadorf project adds significant capacity to Europe’s growing pipeline of utility-scale storage assets and reflects increasing demand for long-duration battery systems designed to improve grid flexibility and stability.
Once completed, the facility is expected to operate as a critical infrastructure asset for balancing renewable supply and demand in northern Germany, supporting both system reliability and the continued expansion of clean energy generation.
