Sunotec Advances Construction of Germany’s Largest EEG Hybrid Solar-Battery Plant

Sunotec has reached a construction milestone at the Hybrid Power Plant Zerbst, a solar and battery storage project that is set to become Germany’s largest hybrid power plant supported under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).

The facility is located on a 41-hectare former gravel pit in Saxony-Anhalt and combines 46.4 MWp of solar photovoltaic capacity, delivered through approximately 73,000 solar modules, with a 57 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The plant is designed as a fully co-located hybrid asset, enabling dispatchable renewable electricity and grid-support services.

The project is being developed by Statkraft and is expected to produce around 50,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to supply approximately 14,000 households.

Zerbst is Sunotec’s first hybrid power plant in Germany and serves as a demonstration of its integrated project delivery approach, which goes beyond traditional engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) models. The company managed key project phases internally, including engineering, geotechnical assessments, and environmental planning, and will remain responsible for operations and maintenance after commissioning.

According to Zharin Atanasov-Lankes, Managing Director of Sunotec Germany, the project highlights the company’s ability to deliver complex renewable energy systems at scale, as hybrid solar and storage assets gain importance in Germany’s energy transition.
