Dominion Energy Plans Major Renewable and Grid Expansions in 2024 IRP

16 Oct 2024
Dominion Energy has outlined a comprehensive vision for the future of energy in its 2024 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), filed with the Virginia State Corporation Commission and the North Carolina Utilities Commission. The plan includes a wide range of energy sources and grid upgrades to meet growing demand, with nearly 80% of new power generation coming from carbon-free sources over the next 15 years.

Key highlights include the development of approximately 3,400 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind and an additional 12,000 MW of solar energy, alongside 4,500 MW of battery storage. The IRP also anticipates the integration of small modular nuclear reactors by the mid-2030s. About 20% of the projected energy will come from natural gas, ensuring a stable backup for renewable sources.

Driven by the Virginia Clean Economy Act and increasing energy needs, the IRP supports long-term goals for reliability, affordability, and sustainability. The company expects power demand to grow 5.5% annually through the next decade.

In addition to new energy sources, Dominion Energy is investing heavily in the grid. This year alone, the company completed 123 new transmission projects and plans to enhance the distribution network with strategic undergrounding and storm hardening measures.
