Eaton to Repurpose Retired Tennessee Coal Plant for Grid Reliability

26 Jun 2025
Eaton is partnering with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to transform the retired Bull Run Fossil Plant in Clinton, Tennessee, into a critical grid reliability asset. The project will repurpose existing equipment from the decommissioned coal-fired facility into synchronous condensers, a key technology for stabilizing modern energy grids.

The conversion involves turning one machine--comprising two generators--into two 605 MVAR synchronous condensers, which will enhance grid inertia, mitigate voltage fluctuations, and support clean energy integration as coal plants phase out and renewable sources increase.

"Synchronous condenser conversions are complex technical projects that require a high degree of specialized knowledge," said Igor Stamenkovic, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Eaton's Electrical Engineering Services and Systems Division. "We are confident this transformation will enhance reliability and grid stability in the region."

In addition to turnkey engineering services, Eaton is providing electrical distribution and control infrastructure, including medium-voltage variable-frequency drives, motor control centers, panelboards, relay panels, and network automation hardware.

The project supports broader efforts in grid modernization, resilience, and decarbonization, aligning with national energy transition goals.
