Edify Energy Secures $48.2m Grant for Townsville Green Hydrogen Hub

31 Jan 2024

Edify Energy has successfully secured a substantial grant from the Australian Government's Regional Hydrogen Hubs program, receiving $48.2 million to bolster the development of Townsville's Green Hydrogen Hub. This funding marks a significant step forward in advancing Australia's renewable energy agenda.

The Green Hydrogen Hub, to be developed by Edify, will be situated in the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct in Townsville, Queensland. The facility, powered by a co-located solar photovoltaic and battery storage system, is poised to become a cornerstone of Northern Australia's emerging green energy landscape.

With an initial capacity to produce 800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, ramping up to over 150,000 tonnes, the hub aims to meet both domestic demand and target export markets, leveraging the strategic location of the Port of Townsville. Edify is already engaging with potential off-takers across various sectors to meet the growing demand for clean fuel alternatives.

The project is not only expected to revolutionize the energy sector but also stimulate economic growth in Townsville, generating around 200 local jobs during construction and fostering collaboration with local enterprises, research institutions, and technology experts. This initiative aligns with Townsville's vision to become a leading global hub for green hydrogen production, leveraging its renewable resources and skilled workforce.

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, emphasized the significance of renewable hydrogen in supporting industrial decarbonization, asserting Townsville's readiness to contribute to the global transition towards sustainable energy solutions. Edify Energy's Chief Executive, John Cole, expressed excitement about the project's potential to position Townsville at the forefront of the green hydrogen revolution, thanking various stakeholders for their support and collaboration in realizing this vision.
