EDP and IGAT Partner on Italy’s Largest Solar-Plus-Storage Industrial Project

18 Jun 2025
EDP Energia Italia, a division of the European renewables leader EDP Group, has partnered with IGAT, a chemical company under the SIAD Group, to construct a 2.5 MWp photovoltaic (PV) plant with integrated energy storage at IGAT's industrial site in Caserta, southern Italy.

The installation will be the largest EDP solar project in Italy with storage integration and is expected to generate approximately 3.5 GWh of clean energy annually. It will feature over 3,400 solar panels and a 1 MWh battery storage system capable of delivering up to two hours of energy at full capacity.

This initiative supports IGAT's "Green Hydrogen" project, funded by Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which will use EDP-generated solar power to run an electrolyzer for green hydrogen production.

The plant aims to reduce grid reliance, cut energy costs, and lower COâ‚‚ emissions by more than 1,100 tons per year--comparable to the carbon absorption of 7,000+ trees.

Massimo Iorio, CEO of IGAT, highlighted the project's alignment with the SIAD Group's sustainability goals, while António Ricciardi, Head of Client Solutions at EDP Europe, emphasized the importance of storage in maximizing renewable energy and ensuring grid stability.

With nearly 150 MWp of distributed solar capacity under contract in Italy, EDP continues to scale clean energy solutions for industrial clients across Europe.
