EDP Renewables Adds 200 MW Solar, 150 MW Storage to California Portfolio
EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) has launched its new Scarlet II Solar Energy Park, a 200 megawatt (MW) solar and 150 MW/600 megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage project in Fresno County, California. This marks a major expansion of the company's existing 1.1 gigawatt (GW) renewable energy footprint in the state.
The new project follows Scarlet I, which began operations in 2024 and includes 200 MW of solar and 40 MW/160 MWh of battery storage. With Scarlet II, EDPR NA strengthens its role in California's clean energy grid, contributing significantly to energy reliability and grid resiliency.
A 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) secures the solar output, while long-term Resource Adequacy (RA) contracts with Ava Community Energy and San José Clean Energy support the battery component. The RA program helps ensure utilities can meet demand and maintain system reliability.
The project is expected to power approximately 68,000 homes annually and deliver millions in local economic impact, including tax revenue, construction spending, and over 140 jobs. EDPR NA reports that over 60% of construction materials were recycled, continuing its environmental stewardship under its Close the Loop Program.
With over 11,400 MW of operating renewable capacity across North America, EDPR NA, headquartered in Houston, Texas, continues to be a major player in the U.S. renewable sector.
