EIB Grants $495 Million Loan to EWE for Major Grid Expansion in Germany
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a $495 million loan to EWE AG, one of Germany's leading energy providers, marking the largest financing EWE has ever received. This funding will support an investment program exceeding $770 million from 2025 to 2028 focused on expanding and digitalizing electricity grids in northern Germany.
The project involves installing over 2,600 kilometers (1,615 miles) of underground power lines and building or modernizing more than 1,100 substations. These upgrades will enhance grid flexibility, resilience, and efficiency, enabling greater integration of renewable energy.
Currently, approximately 95% of the electricity on EWE's grid in Lower Saxony comes from renewable sources. The new infrastructure is expected to connect an additional 3 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy by 2028, contributing to Germany's goal of 80% renewable electricity by 2030 and supporting the EU's REPowerEU initiative.
EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer emphasized the investment's role in securing a more reliable energy supply, while EWE CFO Frank Reiners highlighted its importance in accelerating renewable integration and strengthening regional energy security.
The program also targets social cohesion by directing 40% of investments to EU cohesion regions to promote economic development and job creation.
This agreement underlines the critical role of strategic infrastructure investments in Europe's green energy transition.
