Eku Energy Embarks on UK Expansion with 130MWh Battery Storage Projects

20 Feb 2024

Global energy storage developer Eku Energy has commenced the construction of two battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the UK, with a combined capacity of 130MWh. These BESS, located in Basildon, Essex, and Loudwater, Buckinghamshire, will incorporate battery technology from NHOA Energy, marking Eku Energy's entry into the UK market.

The expansion comes amidst a significant growth trend in online BESS capacity, with NHOA Energy's energy storage division recording a remarkable 384% surge from Q3 2022 to Q3 2023. Eku Energy projects these new BESS installations to be operational by the end of 2024, aligning with their commitment to support the UK's decarbonization goals.

Sandra Grauers Nilsson, CEO of Eku Energy, expressed enthusiasm for the milestone, highlighting the company's dedication to advancing the energy transition globally. With an ambitious pipeline of battery storage projects, Eku Energy aims to deliver 9GWh by 2028 across various regions including the UK, Australia, Italy, and Japan.

The announcement coincides with a notable surge in BESS developments across the UK. Recent projects include Wärtsilä's Quantum High Energy BESS solution in Scotland, ESB's 75MW/150MWh BESS in Dublin - the largest in Ireland, and Lightsource BP's Tiln BESS in Lincolnshire, marking the first of its global multi-gigawatt pipeline. These endeavors collectively reflect the growing momentum towards integrating renewable energy sources and enhancing grid stability nationwide.
