Electrolyser maker Thyssenkrupp Nucera chases €6bn in orders from green hydrogen projects to rebuild shrinking backlog

30 Aug 2023

German Electrolyser Manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Nucera Targets 12GW Sales Worth €6bn Across 36 Projects

Expanding Order Book to Support Two Major Projects

German electrolyser manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Nucera has set its sights on selling 12GW of electrolysis equipment across 36 projects, with an estimated value of €6bn. This initiative aims to bolster its order book while concurrently working on colossal projects in Europe and Saudi Arabia. The company is capitalizing on a 46GW pipeline of potential customers, aiming to rebuild its order book after securing contracts for Shell's 2.4GW project and the Neom Green Hydrogen Company. With impressive Q3 results, Thyssenkrupp Nucera reported €110m in alkaline electrolyser sales, marking a significant milestone.

Challenges and Successes in a Competitive Market

Despite its recent achievements driven by prominent projects like Shell's Holland Hydrogen I and the Neom and ammonia complex in Saudi Arabia, Thyssenkrupp Nucera is facing the challenge of restoring its order book for alkaline electrolysers. While securing nearly €1bn in orders during the first nine months of the previous fiscal year, the firm's electrolyser backlog for this year was a modest €192m. CEO Werner Ponikwar revealed that the company is actively working on a 700MW reservation agreement with H2 Green Steel, aiming to convert it into a comprehensive contract within the next two quarters. Thyssenkrupp Nucera is also scaling up its manufacturing capacity from 1GW to 5GW by the end of the 2025/26 fiscal year to accommodate growing demand.
