Canada Unveils $150M for Clean Energy Projects in Alberta

In line with its Framework to Build a Green Prairie Economy, the Government of Canada has announced over $150 million in investments for nine clean energy projects across Alberta. The funding comes through the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways (SREPs) Program, a $4.5 billion federal initiative aimed at grid modernization and energy storage deployment.

These projects will utilize solar, wind, and grid infrastructure to displace 760,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually while generating enough electricity to power 170,000 homes.

"Renewable energy is increasingly making the most economic sense to build," stated Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, emphasized Alberta's opportunity to build a strong and sustainable economy.

Highlighted projects include:

  • $25 million for a 22-megawatt solar farm in the Killarney Lake region.
  • $25 million for a 280-megawatt wind energy project near Bow Island, County of Forty Mile.
  • Funding for the 140-MW Big Sky Solar Power Project and 192-MW Wild Rose 2 Wind Farm, each receiving $25 million.

Since 2021, the SREPs program has funded 72 clean energy deployment projects, underscoring the government's commitment to achieving a net-zero future.

George Chahal, MP for Calgary Skyview, remarked that these investments will boost clean electricity production, save costs, and grow the economy.
