China Opens First AI Data Center Powered by 100% Green Electricity

China has launched its first artificial intelligence data center fully powered by renewable energy, marking a step toward integrating clean power with high-performance computing infrastructure.

The facility, located in Zhongwei in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, operates entirely on direct green electricity and is designed to run on wind and solar power without reliance on conventional grid electricity.

It is also China’s first AI data center built to a wind-powered liquid-cooling standard, combining renewable energy supply with advanced cooling technology to improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

The project is part of the broader “Eastern Data, Western Computing” initiative, which shifts large-scale computing workloads to western regions of China where renewable energy resources are more abundant.

According to China Telecom Ningxia Branch, the data center achieves a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15, indicating improved energy efficiency compared with conventional facilities.

The combination of renewable energy integration and liquid-cooling systems allows the site to support high-performance computing while significantly reducing electricity demand.

Zhongwei has developed into a major computing hub in China, hosting multiple large-scale data center parks and positioning itself as a key node in the country’s AI and digital infrastructure expansion.
