CIP’s 500MW Coalburn BESS Goes Live
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced the start of commercial operations at its 500MW Coalburn 1 battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
The two-hour lithium-ion facility is now the largest operational battery energy storage system in Europe, according to CIP.
Coalburn 1 is one of three transmission-connected BESS projects developed by CIP in Scotland. Together with Coalburn 2 and Devilla, the projects are expected to provide 1.5GW of power capacity and 3GWh of energy storage.
The projects are designed to support the UK electricity system by providing additional flexibility and enabling the integration of renewable generation.
“The successful delivery of Coalburn 1 marks an important milestone for CIP and our growing European BESS portfolio,” said Nischal Agarwal, Partner at CIP. He added that the project would support renewable power integration and contribute to lower consumer costs.
