EDP launches Iberian Peninsula’s first triple-hybrid renewable energy project
EDP has launched what it says is the first triple-hybrid renewable energy project in the Iberian Peninsula, integrating wind, solar and battery energy storage through a single grid connection at its Las Lomillas site in Cuenca, Spain. The battery system is currently undergoing testing ahead of commercial operation.
The project combines a 49.5MW wind farm commissioned in 2005, a 36MW solar photovoltaic plant added in 2025, and a 36MW/72MWh battery energy storage system, bringing the site's total installed capacity to 122MW. The three technologies share infrastructure with an export capacity of approximately 50MW to the electricity grid.
According to EDP, the battery system represents the final stage of the hybrid development. An energy management system coordinates the operation of the wind, solar and storage assets, determining whether electricity should be exported directly to the grid, stored in the battery system or, when appropriate, used to charge the batteries for later dispatch.
The company stated that the project is intended to make more efficient use of existing grid infrastructure while increasing operational flexibility and supporting the integration of renewable generation into the electricity system. The battery testing phase marks the final step before the facility enters commercial service.
