Egypt to Build First Wind Turbine Plant and 2 GW Wind Project
Egypt has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish its first wind turbine manufacturing plant and develop a 2 GW wind power project in the Gulf of Suez, marking a step toward localising renewable energy production and expanding clean energy capacity.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, in the presence of Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat.
The agreement brings together SANY Renewable Energy, Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).
Under the MoU, a manufacturing facility will be developed with an annual production capacity of 2 GW of wind turbines, aimed at supplying domestic projects and supporting exports to regional markets. The plan also includes a 2,000 MW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez, expected to be integrated into Egypt’s national electricity grid within 23 months of execution. Full manufacturing operations are expected within two years of final agreements.
Key signatories included Li Qiang, Mona Rizk, and Ehab Ismail, representing SANY Renewable Energy, EETC, and NREA respectively.
The initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to increase renewable energy’s share in the national energy mix and strengthen local manufacturing capabilities within the energy sector. It also supports the use of local currency in energy infrastructure development and aims to position Egypt as a regional hub for renewable energy production and exports.
