Germany and Denmark Launch Bornholm Energy Island Project

Germany and Denmark have agreed to jointly develop the Bornholm Energy Island in the Baltic Sea, aiming to strengthen cross-border energy security and expand offshore wind capacity.

The agreement formalizes a first phase of the Energy Highways initiative, part of the European Grids Package announced in December 2025. The project will connect 3 GW of offshore wind power to both the Danish and German grids, creating a shared European energy resource.

Designated as a Project of Common Interest (PCI), the initiative has received a €645 million grant from the EU Connecting Europe Facility. PCIs are prioritized to enhance cross-border energy infrastructure and support EU investment in strategic energy projects.

Dan Jørgensen, EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing, highlighted the significance of the agreement: “The Bornholm Energy Island sets a blueprint for offshore renewable energy in Europe and supports clean, homegrown energy, industrial competitiveness, and security.”

The project is expected to position the Baltic Sea as a hub for future offshore wind projects across the EU, while facilitating industrial and economic benefits for both Germany and Denmark.
