Invenergy Gets Approval for 333-MW Wind Project in South Dakota

Invenergy has received regulatory approval for a 333-MW wind project in South Dakota, marking the state’s largest wind farm upon completion. The permit, issued by the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission, covers 68,300 acres in Haakon County and allows installation of up to 87 turbines.
The project, developed by Philip Wind Partners LLC, a subsidiary of Invenergy, is estimated to cost $750 million. A 5.5-mile, 230-kV generator transmission tie line will connect the wind farm to the state grid. Construction is slated to begin in June, with commercial operations expected to start in December 2027.
Commission chairman Chris Nelson confirmed the permit issuance, stating that the applicant met all criteria under state law.
The Philip Wind Project has been under development for over eight years and was acquired by Invenergy from Southern Power Company in 2019. Once operational, the farm will significantly contribute to South Dakota’s renewable energy capacity and support the state’s clean energy goals.
